HOPE,FUTURE & LOVE -- Motorola and China's Project Hope

 Recollections

In 1997, China was witnessing the rapid development of telecommunications and Motorola was becoming a household name across the nation. When the China Youth Development Foundation needed cellular phones for a Particular event, Motorola was the obvious choice. Thus began the story of Motorola and China's Project Hope.

It was in the same year that Motorola announced its commitment to the charity. Since then, Motorola's businesses and individual contributors in the company have been actively supporting the project with donations of money and study materials. On December 12, 1994, Motorola(China) Electronics Ltd(MCEL) made the first donation, of which RMB2.6 million came from the Cellular Subscriber Group and the Paging Product Group. From then on, many MCEL employees volunteered portions of their monthly salaries for the same cause. More than 1,000 employees in Beijing and Tianjin took part in the "One on One" assistance program to aid school dropouts.

Helping children return to the classroom

In the underdeveloped areas where Motorola Hope Schools are located there is a very serious problem with children dropping out of school. Hope Schools are not only intended to provide schooling for hundreds of children, they also make it possible to coax children who have abandoned school back into the classroom.

Motorola hopes that every Motorola-funded primary school will set a good example in the local communities. Hope Schools will act as beacons to encourage the desire for learning in all school-age children and persuade them to attend class regularly.

If one day any of you acquire the appropriate knowledge and skills and would like to come work for Motorola and join our big family, you are welcome, Bob Galvin told Hope School children in Beijing

Motorola is preparing to set up a tracking system so as to further support these children. The systematic tracking system will provide information on children's background before and after receiving Motorola funds up to his or her college education and employment. By doing such investigations. Motorola wishes to raise constructive proposals to further China's Project Hope.

"One on One" bonds Motorolans and children who have dropped out of school

Beginning from 1994, a thousand of Motorola associates volunteered to take part in the "One on One" Assisance bonding Program. These Motorola employees have donated a total of RMB350,000. Today, many more employees are involved in the bonding program, in Beijing and Tianjin, in the branch offices located in other cities, and among Motorola joint ventures in shanghai, guangzhou and sichuan.

The success of the "One on One" program is a demonstration of the enthusiasm of Motorolans in supporting China's Project Hope. this mentoring program allows individuals to offer practical support and build up a bond between two people.

Rick Younts is Motorola's Executive Vice President and President of Motorola's Asia-Pacific Region. He has been financially supporting 10 Chinese children. When he looked at the photos of the Chinese children he is helping he thought of his own son, who died tragically young in a traffic accident. He considers the children he is helping as his"10 sons"

P.Y.Lai, MCEL President, set a good example by encouraging MCEL employees to play a role in building a responsible and caring society. He has supported more than 30 children, five of whom are in the Uygur ethnic minority.

Training fund for Hope school teachers

Wang Yunlin, a school headmaster from a landlocked area, expresses his appreciation after attending a Motorola-sponsored professional training program. He said,"The training class for Hope Primary School teachers was of great benefit to me. Upon returning to our school, we made remarkable progress in our teaching methods and course curricula. With Motorola's support, we are confident that we can make our school the best in the area."

Since time immemorial teachers have been respected and admired as role models and mentors for children. Today, in the inland underdeveloped areas of China, teachers are a window of the world through which children are able to see what the future may bring. In order to cultivate social infrastructure and create a strong backbone. Motorola has placed a priority on improving the quality of teachers.

In 1996, in addition to supporting China's Project Hope with donations, the company funded professional training for Hope School teachers across the country. This Motorola initiative was a first for Project Hope donors. Between March 8-14, 1996, the first training programs for Motorolasupported Hope Schools was held in Shengsi, zhejiang Province, where the National Training Center for Project Hope is located. More than 50 teachers from 30 primary schools in 13 provinces and regions attended the training program, 27 of them came from the Motorolasupported schools. Motorola provided funds to cover their training expenses. In the words of Liang Chunmiao, one of the teachers, the training was very productive:"If only all Hope School teachers across the country could come here to study as we have done."

 Motorola Hope Tour

"Why is the sky so blue today? What makes the air so fresh? Motorola. Because you are sending us a ray of Hope." The children recited a poem they wrote to welcome visitors from Motorola. Hundreds of local people in Xikou Township, Jiangxi Province, gathered early in the morning at the Hope School that motorola funds helped to build. They wore sashes which simply read "Thank you!"

In September 1995, Motorola conducted the first group Hope Tour. Led by MCEL President P.Y.Lai, 29 Motorola staff members visited Xikou Township in Xiushui County, Jiangxi Province to attend the official opening for a Hope School built with Motorola donations.

Impacted by harsh geographic conditions and lacking in resources, Xikou township has been classified as a national Hardship Area. There are 13,000 school-age children, 93% of them attending school. Construction of Xikou Hope Primary School began in April and was completed in September 1995.

MCEL President P.Y.Lai expressed his wish that Motorola would continue making contributions towards education in rural China. Motorola Scholarships, stationery, and books were awarded at the ceremony.

 Motorola Hope Tour to Xinjiang

Motorola led another 28-member Hope Tour on October 12, 1997 to the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Regions. Under the leadcrship of P.Y Lai President of the motorota (China)Electronics Ltd,the group visited the newly-built primary schools which had been built with the funds Motorola had donated.

MCEL President P.Y.Lai announced that Motorola plans to donate a further RMB 1 million to build 4 more Hope Schools in Xinjiang in 1998. On October 13, after a three-hour flight and a two-hour trip through the desert, the Motorola Hope Tour group arrived at Cele, a county at the southern tip of Xinjiang. Cele is the poorest county in the autonomous region. One out of ten children drops out of school for various reasons. The shortage of classrooms to meet current needs has been estimated at 300,000 square meters and the region lacks an estimated 4,100 teachers.

At the inauguration ceremony, Motorola staff members presented their gifts of stationery to children of the Cele Hope School.

In order to learn more about Xinjiang and the conditions of the people living in the remote areas, the Motorola Hope Tour group visited another two Hope Schools in Cele County. The group donated RMB10,000 to each school.

At the same time, the members also donated RMB8000 to buy shoes for all children who attended school barefoot.

"Though the Fall is already here, the sun in the southern part of Xinjiang scorches as if it were summer. I had to wear sun-glasses as I watched Uygur children sitting in their neat clothes on the recently-built playground of their new school.

They seemed to care very little about the blazing sun, nor did they fidget during the long dedication ceremony of the school. They simply sat, smiling, listening, waiting, and occasionally murmuring. Their eyes were alight with anticipation and excitement as if they were celebration a festival. Suddenly, I found I could not see them, not because of the sun but because there were tears in my eyes…"

Motorola Makes 5th Donation to Project Hope

Beijing, November 3 -- Motorola (China) Electronics Ltd. (MCEL) Wednesday donated a total of three million yuan (U.S. $ 360,000) to Project Hope to support the basic education in poor rural areas in China.

At a ceremony held at Motorola North Asia Center in Beijing, Motorola Senior Vice President and MCEL President P.Y. Lai presented the cheque for Project Hope to Gu Xiaojin, Standing Deputy Secretary-General of the China Youth Development Foundation.

The donation, the fifth over a period of five years, brought the total amount Motorola has contributed to Project Hope to 15 million yuan (U.S.$ 1.8 million).

To help the children who were deprived of opportunities for basic education in poor rural areas, Motorola made its first donation of three million yuan (U.S.$ 360,000) in 1994 and has donated the same amount each year since 1996.

Project Hope has been an important project for Motorola during the past few years. Robert W. Galvin, Chairman of the Executive Committee of Motorola Inc., and his wife, Mary Galvin, attended the 3rd donation ceremony in Beijing in 1997. Chief Executive Officer Chris Galvin also expressed deep concerns to the impoverished children and their teachers.

With Motorola's support, 27 Motorola Hope Primary Schools have sprung up in 13 provinces and autonomous regions around the country. Some 5,000 former dropouts have returned to classrooms and regained their hope for life.

Last year, when some parts of China were stricken by severe floods, Motorola donated fund and equipment totaling 28 million yuan (U.S.$ 3.4 million), of which 10 million (U.S. $ 1.2 million) yuan in cash was used to construct more than 10 primary schools in four provinces hardest hit.

To address the changing of Project Hope's focus, MCEL shifted its strategy from taking part in the One-on-One Assistance Program to setting up "Star of Hope" scholarships for outstanding students at Motorola Hope Primary Schools. Motorola hopes to help China train more cross-century talents.

"I take great pride in Motorola's involvement in Project Hope and its achievements in this noble cause. We will continue to support this vitally important program," C.D. Tam said.

In addition to its support of basic education in poor rural areas, Motorola also dedicated itself to China's higher education.

Since 1992, Motorola has donated 7.3 million yuan (U.S. $ 880,000) to the 8 universities, benefiting some 6,000 top students and 600 outstanding teachers.

Motorola's devotion to education has won the acclaims of the Chinese government, the local people and the world. The Fortune magazine, in its Aug-Sept. issue, ranked Motorola No. 1 among 500 foreign companies having demonstrated good corporate citizenship in China (community relations, support for education and charity, good environmental record, etc.).

Lai said in his speech that Motorola, since its funding, has fostered a corporate culture based on respect for education and knowledge, and has planted this culture around the world.

Motorola has a very strong responsibility to help improve the basic education situation in China's poor rural areas, he said.

"As China's business partner, MCEL is firmly committed to helping solve the concerns of the local people. Through various efforts, we want to be a good corporate citizen in China and be recognized by China as a local company, " he added.

Motorola is a global leader in providing integrated communications solutions and embedded electronic solutions. Sales in 1998 were U.S$ 29.4 billion.
