In addition, the institute will emphasize promoting programs in building-up more local technical talents through the technology partnership and exchange programs with China science and technology community.

MCRDI's research focus covers advanced material research, software development, personal communication product design development, most advanced mobile communications network solutions, and man-machine interaction technologies in future hardware and software applications, etc.

Major R&D Centers and Labs

Global Telecom Solutions Sector (GTSS) China Design Center

GTSS China Design Center is the 2nd largest GTSS R&D center (after the one in the US) in Motorola. It is an R&D group that does research, system engineering, software/hardware development, test, and new product introduction for cellular infrastructure products for the 2G/2.5G/3G mobile communication systems. There are currently around 250 engineers in the design center, who are important contributors to GSM and CDMA products. The GSD within the design center personnel participated in the SEI CMM assessment in April 2003, where GSD attained SEI Level 4 rating. The overall strategy for the GTSS China Design Center is to continue to strengthen its overall leadership and technical capabilities to enable it to successfully take on additional responsibilities and ownerships for major elements of GTSS programs and products.

Global Software Group (GSG) China

GSG China is the first organization to implement SEI CMM in software engineering in Mainland China. It achieved Level 5 in 2000, making China the 3rd country receiving CMM Level 5 after the US and India. GSG China has set its goal to become the chosen software solution provider to customers and achieve total customer satisfaction. Currently there are about 700 R&D staff working in three software centers located in Beijing, Nanjing and Chengdu.

Personal Communications Sector (PCS) Beijing R&D Center

As one of the four PCS R&D centers based in Asia-Pacific region, PCS Beijing R&D Center enjoys investment of over $10 million every year on project development, equipment procurement and training. There are about 300 engineers conducting research on software, electrical, mechanical and industrial design development. Its R&D focus includes touch-screen smart phones and platform development, refreshes of GSM cellular phones, and localization of CDMA cellular phones, etc. The Center has 8 major well-established labs such as SAR (specific absorption rate) Lab, Electronic Engineering Lab (EE Lab), Antenna Chamber, Advanced Mechanical Lab, PCB Lab, Audio Lab, Software Screen Booth, and ESD (Electronic-static discharge) Work Station.

PCS Consumer Experience Design --Beijing

The major functions of CXD are to provide a total great user experiences to end user at User Interface, Human Factor, Industrial Design, Graphic Design. As a global design organization, CXD has created and supported all cross regions and system (GSM/CDMA) projects within Motorola. As the biggest branche in Asia, CXD Beijing plays an essential role in CXD to support most of the Asia driven projects as well as some of the global and ODM projects. Though CXD Beijing is a brand new organization in Motorola, it has accomplished many successful projects in the past two years, such as C300, A388, C350, V290 and A760. CXD Beijing has also won many world-class design awards.

PCS Asia End to End Solution Development Team

End to End Solution Development team (PCS Asia) focuses on the study and development of new technology and applications for Motorola mobile phones, the development and certification of preload applications, study and development of application server to help PCS BJDC to develop and test preloaded and native applications, and provide service to preload and native application. The team also helps and supports third parties to develop mobile applications based on Motorola mobile phones. This team was setup it 2000. Engineers in this team are able to develop and certify embedded applications, preload KJava applications, downloaded servers and application servers.

PCS Client Applications and Architectures

PCS Client Applications and Architectures (CAA) group has the overall responsibility of developing software platforms and applications deployed in current and future Motorola mobile phone products. The CAA-China team works closely with the CAA teams in the US and other parts of the world and focuses on mobile phone applications and user interface implementation for Motorola products around the world.

Motorola Advanced Technology Center-Asia

Motorola Advanced Technology Center-Asia (MATC-Asia) was established in 1995. The enter owns a modern materials research laboratory and a Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) research laboratory and has the capabilities of materials and failure analysis and CIM software R&D. MATC-Asia consists of three sections, each of which is focused on specific goals and objectives. Materials Research/Failure Analysis owns a modern Material and Failure Analysis Lab that has the capabilities of failure and reliability analysis, Material thermal and mechanical property characterization, Non-destructive inspection and manufacturing process development. Manufacturing System R&D has expertise in computer-controlled machine automation, modeling analysis, and virtue prototyping technologies. Technology Realization focuses on application and transfer of advanced technologies, provides technical training and seminars, collaborates with regional research institutes.

Motorola China Research Center

Motorola China Research Center (MCRC), established in Shanghai in 2000, is a point of presence of Motorola Labs in China. MCRC conducts mid-to-long term research in advanced technologies that would be used by Motorola mainstream products. Based on its location, MCRC also supports regional product groups for their technology needs, such as Chinese language related user interface technologies. MCRC research programs were defined in the core competency category of Motorola Labs. The current focuses include embedded automatic speech recognition, speech synthesis, text summarization, hand writing recognition, text input methods, video understanding, etc. After three years?hard working, MCRC has created a sequence of technology transfers to support major Motorola product groups. It established close partnership with R&D centers of PCS, GSG and GTSS. In addition to the onsite projects, MCRC has also set up research partnerships with a number of top ranking Chinese universities and national key research institutes.
