Motorola, a global leader in communications, continues to set the trend in China's exciting telecommunications market, through its stylish products, cutting-edge technology, and leading market share.Motorola's Personal Communications Sector employs more than 4000 people in China in manufacturing, sales, R&D and service as well as a brand and marketing team that produces innovative marketing communications. Motorola's market share has ranked No.1 in China since 1999.
Back in 2000, in collaboration with China Mobile's GPRS marketing efforts, Motorola consecutively launched five GPRS handsets to satisfy the demands of China's burgeoning telecommunications market. That series of GPRS devices was quickly accepted by mass market Chinese users. Once launched, high-end GPRS phones immediately dominated China's GPRS market and created a solid foundation for a stable platform to bridge the transition from 2.5G to 3G.
GPRS technology enables the development of handsets with color display, the next strong market trend. At that time, MMS and K-Java also became available for the market. In 2002, Motorola announced a series of products designed for different segments of the market and became the largest provider of GPRS models in China.
Motorola also leads the competition in CDMA. In May 2001, Motorola signed distribution contracts for the first two million CDMA handsets with local distributors, launching two CDMA models, V8060 and V680. In August, the Ministry of Information Industry announced that with the approval of the SDPC, Motorola China was the only foreign invested firm among the 19 qualifiers. The V680, launched in 2002, was the handset that marked the true commercial start-up of China's CDMA wireless communication business. The model V730 is the first CDMA 1X device in China, and also the first CDMA device supporting K-JAVA technology.
In October, 2003, Motorola announced its first smart-phone, the A760. Supporting open LINUX operation system and wireless Java technology, this multi-tasking, multi-functional handset provides application developers with a very friendly environment and a flexible open platform. In January, 2004, Motorola announced another high tier professional handset, the A768, which was immediately adopted by China Mobile as its smart-phone of choice. This development represents a most important cooperation between domestic operators and mobile manufacturers.
In Dec 2003, Motorola introduced 8 stylish MOTO mobile phones to the market, every single model defined Motorola's understanding of the need to offer consumers a highly personal experience through styling and design and through the application of innovation and advanced technology.
In field of 3G, Motorola was the first manufacturer in the world to commercialise 3G handsets. In 2002, Motorola took the lead in developing the world's first quad band powerful commercial 3G device. Since then, Motorola has launched a total commercial 3G handsets, A830, A835, A920 and A925, extending its global lead in this new technology. In 2003, the company secured partnerships with many major overseas operators starting to deploy their 3G networks, including Hutchison Telecom's 3. In recent years, Motorola has collaborated with Chinese government bodies and operators to enable the advent of 3G, supporting them in their preparation for China's adoption of 3G services.
Benefiting from comprehensive service network and strong commitment to the market, Motorola has established a leadership position in providing service to customers and consumers, which includes a nationwide service network consisting of 40 authorized Total Solution Service Centres and over 500 service stations across the country.
