Motorola Stimulates Data Revenues and Reduces
Customers' Financial Risk at 3GSM World Congress
Minimises capital and operating expenses for all players in the
mobile data services market
CANNES, France, 3GSM World Congress, Feb. 18, 2002 - Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT), the leading provider of complete General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) experiences, today announced a comprehensive portfolio of mobile data solutions to convert consumer demand into revenue. The initiatives position operators for 3G by accelerating the deployment of data applications and limiting the capital and operating costs of delivering them. Typical of the new Motorola solutions launched at 3GSM World Congress is Mobile Services Caf¨¦, which offers operators a unique combination of applications and technology.
"Motorola is focused on partnering with its customers to deliver new wireless experiences that are simpler, smarter and fun. We have introduced our third generation of GPRS handsets and are working with our customers to introduce new data services that will help them generate revenue quickly and identify ways to capitalize on their investment," said Kevin Loosemore, President Motorola Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). "As the leader in GPRS, Motorola believes the new services it is introducing today will help kick start the adoption of GPRS and 3G. These smart solutions uniquely position us as the only vendor that can deliver solutions for all parts of the value chain - operators, consumers, application developers and other handset manufacturers."
UK operator first to trial Mobile Services Caf¨¦
mmO2, formerly BT Cellnet, today became the first European network operator to trial Mobile Services Caf¨¦, which combines a rich menu of services, applications and middleware to help carriers drive consumer adoption of mobile data offerings.
Mobile Services Caf¨¦ offers a choice of customisable content and services that can be run as a managed service by Motorola or deployed within the operator's environment.
"Operators want to offer a unique choice of applications and services under their own brands, and they need to share the technology and financial risk with partners," said Yvonne Verse, Vice President, Global Go-to-Market and Professional Services for Motorola's Internet Software and Content Group. "With Mobile Services Caf¨¦, Motorola offers the flexibility and speed-to-market that carriers need if they are to meet the ever-growing demand for mobile data services."
mmO2 will initially trial the entertainment platform, enabling a portfolio of SMS, WAP and J2METM (JavaTM 2 Platform, Micro Edition) games content. Mobile Services Caf¨¦ also offers messaging, M-Commerce and corporate productivity applications.
Cutting network lifecycle costs
Network operators will also benefit from four new infrastructure initiatives that build on Motorola's expertise in the introduction of early GPRS networks. The initiatives are designed to reduce risk at every stage of a network's lifecycle by helping operators speed network deployment, improve performance, minimise operating expenses, and increase revenues on today's networks as they move to 3G.
-
CH2M Hill alliance - An agreement with CH2M Hill Communications Group, a leading global provider of network delivery solutions, will streamline the roll out of data networks. CH2M Hill's skills in the civil aspects of network design, build, integration and maintenance will help accelerate network deployment. The alliance will offer operators an integrated team and a consistent service across borders.
-
Network Support Programme - Motorola's Network Support Programme (NSP) has been introduced in the EMEA region in order to reduce operating expenses and subscriber churn. NSP replaces generic network support with a tailored service, designed to support the specific needs of different operators.
-
GPRS Simulation and Modeling Service - Motorola's GPRS Simulation and Modeling Service (GSMS) is also now available in the EMEA region. The GSMS measures quality of service and models the performance of applications ahead of deployment. Analysing the quality of everything from simple emails to rich games, the GSMS helps evaluate the business risk of deploying each new service.
-
GPRS Intelligent Optimisation Service (IOS) - Motorola's GPRS IOS enables operators to optimise their radio access networks for data as well as voice. It builds on the outstanding success of Motorola's GSM IOS service that has had a major impact on improving quality of service and increasing network capacity.
"As 3G networks are rolled out, we plan further extensions to the service portfolio to meet our customers' requests for combined 2G/3G services like 2G/3G optimisation. IOS for UMTS, which will leverage our success at optimising GSM, GPRS and CDMA networks, is among our planned offerings," said Michael Krutz, General Manager of Motorola Global Telecom Solutions Sector's Network Services organisation in the EMEA region.

The new i.300 Innovative Convergence Platform includes an advanced chipset, development environment and full support for building feature-rich multimedia phones and video communicators.
The platform is designed to lower the barriers of entry to prospective makers of 3G devices. Pete Shinyeda, corporate VP and general manager of Motorola's Wireless and Broadband Systems Group, summarised the advantages: "It limits the risk and cuts out years of development time."
