Sewon Telecom, A Leading Korean Manufacturer of GSM Mobile Phones, Selects Motorola's Innovative Convergence Platform
Sewon to Drive Mass Market to Mobile Data with Motorola i.250 GSM/GPRS Platform
AUSTIN, Texas - May 23, 2002--
Sewon Telecom, one of South Korea's leading original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and original design manufacturers (ODMs), has adopted the Innovative ConvergenceTM i.250 platform from Motorola's (NYSE: MOT) Semiconductor Products Sector (SPS) to develop state-of-the-art 2.5G GSM/GPRS cellular phones for global distribution.
A comprehensive silicon-to-software solution, the i.250 Platform was chosen to enable the company to quickly get to market with smart, Sewon-branded 2.5G wireless communication products. Additionally, Sewon expects to use the platform to design and manufacture products for its expanding global customer base.
Based in Seoul, South Korea, Sewon Telecom is a major mobile handset manufacturer and is actively involved in developing miniature wireless mobile devices. To strengthen this leadership position, Sewon plans to use Motorola's Innovative Convergence platform to develop 2.5G mobile phones to serve the mobile communications markets demanding high-speed mobile data services and handsets.
Sewon's vice president C.Y. Har said, "Through our N.E.X.T. Mobile initiative, we continue to focus on driving telecommunications technologies that will enrich people's lives and we expect that the i.250 will help us provide the type of feature-rich solutions that our customers are seeking."
"We look forward to providing this strategically important manufacturer with our 2.5G platform, giving them exceptional flexibility for getting to market with compelling, Internet-enabled mobile consumer products," said Pete Shinyeda, corporate vice president and general manager of Motorola's Wireless and Broadband Systems Group. "With the i.250's streamlined, compact design, Sewon can easily add personality and packaging to their wireless products while focusing on applications, branding, features and style."
The i.250 platform covers a complete range of voice-centric, voice-data, and data-centric products in addition to enabling migration to the Innovative Convergence i.300 3G GSM/UMTS platform. Scalable and highly integrated, i.250 combines an advanced chipset with an industry-leading development environment, field-proven GPRS protocol software, type certification support, and best-in-class system cost.
The i.250 also integrates functions that are typically separate, resulting in a part count up to 50 percent lower than many competing solutions, which leads to significantly reduced system costs and cuts deployment time by up to a year.
