Motorola Pledges Support For China's
Home Appliances Export and Auto Industry with "One-on-One" Strategies
Aiming to Enable China to Achieve No. 1 Positions with World's No. 1 Technologies
Beijing, China - June 28, 2002 - Sparked by China's entry into the World Trade Organization, the auto market is expected to post an average of 10% plus yearly growth for the next five years. And according to the China Home Appliances Association, China has topped the world as the No. 1 manufacturer and exporter of home electronics with export forecasted at US$ 8 billion for 2002. With 8 billion semiconductors driving the digital world, Motorola, the world's No. 1 microcontrollers maker pledges to support China to capture the growing markets with its "One-on-One" strategies.
- Strengthen China's No. 1 Home Appliances Position by accelerating the development of advanced products with world-leading microncontroller technologies
- As the world's No. 1 auto electronics supplier for 40 years, support China's auto industry to achieve top-quality automobiles - cleaner, safer and "smarter" cars
- Committed to develop local engineering talents, supporting China to become the world's No 1 talent pool as China's No 1 electronic investor
"To cement its position in the export market, the challenge for China's "Star Enterprises" in the home appliances industry now is to move up the scale to develop more advanced, competitive products faster," remarked Stephen Wong, vice president and general manager of the Transportation and Standard Products Group of Motorola Semiconductors Asia Pacific. " As the world's No 1 in microcontrollers maker for eight years running, Motorola chips and solutions are found in products from the world's top OEMs including Gree, Haier, Little Swan, Midea, Logitech here in China. We have been supporting the developments of China's electronics industry for the last 15 years, and strive to support China to achieve more No.1 positions."
In spite of the slowdown of the semiconductor industry worldwide, chip demand has jumped 8% and 29% in unit sales and dollar sales respectively in 2001. Poised to become the top MCU market, China is forecasted to demand 1.8 billion units of microcontrollers in 2005, up from 779 million in 2001. From keyboards, electronic games, washing machines, security systems and automobiles, Motorola microcontrollers are found in thousands of embedded systems and end products. Its customers included the top names such as Electrolux, Whirlpool, Mercedes Benz, Volvo, BMW, Audi, Ford, General Motors, Volkswagon etc.
For the auto market, evidences are popping up everywhere that the only way to go is up. Spurred by booming car sales, in less than a decade, China has built the world's second largest expressway network, after the United States. As automobile-import tariffs are cut from more than 80% to 25% or less by 2006 with the WTO membership, private-vehicle ownership is becoming a possibility. By 2008, average GDP in Beijing will reach US$6,000, on par with the moderately developed countries. Half of the households are expected to own a car then.
Since the invention of the car radio in the 1930s, Motorola has been a leader in the automotive electronics market. It now leads the world with 13.1% market share, almost double that of the No 2 player. Earlier this year, Siemens has announced to select Motorola 32-bit MCUs to power its next-generation powertrain systems. And in May, Hyundai AUTONET, has signed contracts to develop digital audio and radio products and Bluetooth cellular phone products based on Motorola technologies. As for engine control, Motorola's PowerPC is fast becoming the standard.
"To us, a vehicle doesn't start with a key, but with a dream. By drawing upon our 70 years of experience and expertise in the automotive industry, your future dream car is here today. Your vehicle grows to know what you like and when you like it - all with the safety and efficiency in mind. Our embedded silicon solutions enable sophisticated sensors and systems to tune the car seat, music, steer-by-wire, airbag deployment, engine and transmission management according to your weight and preference."
Another case in point: On-Star, the industry's leading Telematics platform (a fast emerging automotive communications technology that combines safety and security with infotainment. In addition to a feature-rich offering on the enjoyment side - hands-free telephony, navigation, Internet access, it also automatically alert the rescue center once the airbag is deployed.
"Motorola partners closely with auto makers to set the pace for intelligent vehicles. Here in China, our customers include the joint-ventures of the foreign automakers and the local manufacturers such as Shanghai Volkswagen, FAW Volkswagen, Shanghai General Motors, Dongfeng Citroen etc. Car sales and manufacturing are a powerful economic catalyst. We are ready to support China as its auto industry begins to take off."
In support of Motorola's long-term goal to accelerate China's knowledge base, the Transportation and Standard Group is also committed to bring its DigitalDNA chips technology through people's development with its university support program. Currently, it has 12 teaching and application centers across the nation with top-notch universities like Tsinghua, Fudan and BUAA. More than 10,000 students have been trained and gained hands-on experience with Motorola's state-of-the-art products and development tools.
"What sets us apart from others is our involvement and commitment. We are amongst the first to support universities, dated all the way back to1994. And to develop talents, we understand it has to be more than just products donation. Our university programs provide students with real-life opportunities to work on research projects under the supervision of our experts. This gives them a first-hand feel of the world before they even leave schools. Some has coined the "IC" industry as India and China, with India already looking like the Silicon Valley of the East, we are committed to develop China local talents to gain the recognition they deserve."
