Motorola Reiterates Its Long-term Commitment to China

XIAMEN, Sept. 9, 2002 -- Motorola Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Christopher B. Galvin said that the company's determination and resolution to invest in China, a major point in the company's global development strategy, would not change.

Galvin made the remarks in a keynote speech at the forum on international investment, which is part of the 6th China International Fair For Investment & Trade that began on September 8, Sunday in Xiamen, a coastal city in southeast China's Fujian Province.

"While the global economy is slumping, China still maintains rapid growth and has become a focus of world economic development, in particularly, the communications industry."

Motorola formulated a sound development strategy in China when it first set foot in the market in 1987. Over the past 15 years, the company has increased its investment in China by 28 times to RMB 28.5 billion Yuan ($3.4 billion), making Motorola the biggest foreign enterprise in China.

Motorola's strategy is reflected by cooperation with Chinese enterprises in various fields, including production, marketing, management and research and development. China is becoming one of Motorola's global R&D base as well as manufacturing base. Currently Motorola has 18 R&D centers in China, and over 1000 existing R&D engineers and researchers with a plan to triple this number in the next 5 years.

"Our aim in China is to progress together with Chinese enterprises, and through this cooperation both parties benefit. Motorola continues its development in China while Chinese enterprises improve their competitiveness in the international market," Galvin said.

Through its local sourcing policy, Motorola encourages its foreign suppliers to invest in China while helping potential domestic suppliers develop the skill sets to enter the international market. To date, 45 foreign suppliers have set up factories in China. In 2001, Motorola purchased RMB13.3 billion worth of locally produced components, goods and services from Chinese enterprises. Currently, Motorola has 176 direct suppliers and 700 indirect suppliers.

Figures prove Motorola has achieved high brand recognition in China reaching sales of nearly $5 billion last year Motorola has been China's No. 1 handset provider for three consecutive years. If Putting GSM and CDMA together, Motorola is the largest infrastructure provider. China relied on Motorola's two-way radios and networks when it launched the country's first Social Emergency System and when it established the first iDEN trunking system. In the software field, Motorola is the first and up to now, the only company to win the highest CMM (in full) 5 certificate, the highest recognition possible in software quality. Its semiconductor and broadband businesses also have achieved success in China.
