Motorola Marks 10th anniversary of investment in Tianjin
TIANJIAN, Sept. 11, 2002 -- Motorola marked the 10th anniversary of its investment in Tianjin on Wednesday, and Christopher Galvin, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the world giant in communications and embedded solutions, was granted an honorary citizenship by the city of Tianjin for the company's tremendous contribution.
Since it began to invest in Tianjin to set up Motorola (China) Electronics Ltd. in 1992, Motorola has scored remarkable success in China, thanks to support from the Tianjin municipal government and the Tianjin Economic Development Area. Its investment has rocketed from an initial US$120 million to US$3.4 billion, with 10,000 employees and five modern high-tech factories.
Motorola (China) Electronics Ltd. has become the countries largest foreign enterprise in electronics, with its sales in 2001 reaching US$4.9 billion and exports amounting to US$2.1 billion. Tianjin has become the company's Asian manufacturing base of communication products and semiconductor products.
While making tremendous success, Motorola has also contributed significantly to the development of Tianjin. Between 1993 and 2001, Motorola (China) Electronics Ltd. registered accumulative sales of US$21 billion, accumulative exports of US$8.6 billion, and a local sourcing volume of US$5.6 billion, and paid a total amount of tax of US$2.3 billion.
A large number of enterprises in Tianjin, by supplying its products to Motorola, have marched into the international market. Of the company's over 700 suppliers in China, more than 170 are based in Tianjin, and in 2001 alone, Motorola purchased US$300 million of products and services from local suppliers of the city.
Motorola and Tianjin has established an unshakable strategic partnership, and cooperation between the two sides can be termed as a model for win-win development.
"Motorola's success in Tianjin shows that we have made the right decision to invest in Tianjin," said Galvin. "Tianjin has a sound environment for investment, a transparent and effective government, as well as rich and excellent human resources. All these have contributed to the success of Motorola," he said.
"We appreciate the great support given to Motorola by the city of Tianjin and look forward to our future endeavors with Tianjin." he added.
Li Shenglin, mayor of Tianjin, said: "Motorola and Tianjin have developed a deep friendship during their 10-year cooperation, which has been a huge success. We are confident that the two sides will push their cooperation to a new stage in the new century."
Following the celebrations, Galvin and Tianjin vice mayor Wang Shuzu also attended a signing ceremony on the establishment of Motorola Qiangxin (Tianjin) IC Design Co. Ltd., a joint venture between Motorola and Tianjin Qiangxin Chips Design Co. Ltd.
The cooperative company will operate with the purposes to expedite the development of the Chinese national IC design industry and to establish a strong national semiconductor chip design industry. On the principles of long term cooperation, mutual benefit, mutual development, to establish a long term, stable and complete cooperative relationship, to fully exploit the Parties' strength in capital, technology and management, to seize opportunity, expedite development, and to contribute efforts to the development of the semiconductor chip design industry in China.
