China's Largest Local Handset Manufacturer Selects Motorola's Innovative ConvergenceTM Platform to Power Scalable Cellular Solutions
TCL Mobile Communications Chooses Motorola's i.200 Enhanced Voice and i.250 GSM/GPRS Platforms for Feature-Rich Applications
AUSTIN, Texas - November 19, 2002 - TCL Mobile Communication, a powerful, high-tech joint venture member of China's largest manufacturer of electronic devices - TCL Holdings Co., Ltd. - is adopting Motorola Inc.'s (NYSE:MOT) i.200 and i.250 Innovative Convergence(tm) platforms to develop advanced handsets for delivery of voice and high-speed data services to consumers and mobile professionals.
The advanced i.200 and the i.250 platforms for 2G enhanced voice and 2.5G cellular handsets and smartphones offer TCL a complete product portfolio, ranging from voice centric applications to GPRS rich data features such as Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), Java(tm) 2 Micro Edition (J2ME(tm)), Enhanced Messaging Service (EMS), and Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), as well as built-in camera functionality for handheld devices.
"Our rapid growth over the past year demands reliable and rapid product enhancements as we strive to deliver the highest quality GSM/GPRS handsets to millions of consumers," said Dr. Wan Mingjian, CEO of TCL Mobile Communication. "For this, we were looking for a fully scalable platform for designing and developing handsets and smartphones in a high-potential, high-growth environment. Motorola provides us with advanced wireless and semiconductor experience. The i.200/i.250 gives us comprehensive, fully integrated platforms for rapid implementation of next generation handsets for high volume production at low cost."
Established in 1999, TCL Mobile Communication recently announced that it will boost its annual mobile phone capacity from the current 3 million to 12 million units by the end of 2002. Already a leading designer and manufacturer of GSM/GPRS handsets, TCL plans to expand its production schedule and strengthen its market position by leveraging the time-to-market and cost advantages offered by Motorola's Innovative Convergence wireless platforms.
"Today's announcement with TCL marks our 10th major Innovative Convergence customer win since January," said Pete Shinyeda, corporate vice president and general manager of Motorola's Wireless and Broadband Systems Group. "Motorola is redefining wireless and forging a de facto industry standard that offers designers and manufacturers one-stop shopping to create smaller, cost-effective wireless communications products with advanced battery power performance. This provides consumers with effective use of rich features such as multimedia, J2ME, EMS, MMS and built-in cameras."
Innovative Convergence platforms feature a highly integrated chipset, comprehensive reference designs, field-proven GSM/GPRS software and development tools, as well as test environments and services. This complete system approach allows customers such as TCL to focus their resources on product differentiation and customizing handset features to fulfill their customers' requirements.
In addition, Motorola's i.200 and i.250 platforms enable OEMs and ODMs to reduce development time by as much as six months and reduce systems costs through a lower component count. The i.200 platform is an entry-level GSM platform for voice and enhanced voice-only applications. Specifically, the advantages of the i.200 Innovative Convergence platform include flexibility and scalability, offering migration paths from 2G to 2.5G and 3G protocols.
