TMOTOROLA HIGHLIGHTS WIRELESS LEADERSHIP AND LATEST GSM PLATFORM WINS AT
THE FIRST "WE OWN WIRELESS" CEO TECHNOLOGY FORUM
Motorola Teams Up with the China Ministry of Information Industry, EICSC to Showcase Offerings and Opportunities to Asian Phone Makers
December 9, 2002 - Beijing, China
-- With Asia poised to become the number one consumer of cell phones and the semiconductors within them, China's Ministry of Information Industry (EICSC) together with Motorola, is hosting a one-day forum for CEOs of wireless communication companies. Mr. Guo Zhongwen, Vice Minister of China Ministry of Information Industry will kick off the event by giving the opening address.
Called "We Own Wireless", the forum being held in Beijing - capital of the world's No. 1 cellular market - aims to bring together wireless visionaries and leading Chinese companies to highlight changing trends and explore new market opportunities in the region.
"As the No. 1 vendor of wireless communications semiconductors that constantly works alongside some world's best companies, we understand well how leading players can partner together and achieve more. Thus in 'We Own Wireless', it is not just about Motorola. It is about Motorola and customers collaborating to take the wireless future to new heights," said Mr. Pete Shinyeda, Corporate Vice-President and General Manager of Wireless and Broadband Systems Group of Motorola Semiconductor Products Sector.
Speaking on the wireless future, Vice Minster Gou expresses full confidence about the growth prospects and potential of China's wireless market. According to the latest report by the Ministry, the number of cellular subscriptions has already reached 196 millions in the mainland.
Indeed, the full potential of wireless communications is yet to be exploited. The convergence of technologies - cellular, Internet, WLAN, Bluetooth - is bringing unprecedented market opportunities. Even in the economic downturn, the industry is expecting to produce more than two billion cell phones in the next four years worldwide - more than televisions, computers and PDAs combined. And Asia is leading this growth.
"The emergence of contract manufacturers and local brands has made Asia a dominant player in both production and market size. It is forecasted that a total of 575 million handsets will be sold in the region by 2005 (Yankee Group, U.S.), and China alone will be making roughly 233 million mobile phones per year - 34% of the projected global market. And take our Innovative ConvergenceTM platforms for example. In 2002 alone, ten customers have selected it; and eight of them are from Asia including Eastcom, TCL, Benq and Sewon," commented Mr. Shinyeda.
The Chinese handset manufacturers are aggressively honing core cellular technologies, branding and marketing strategies. It is estimated that by the end of 2002, local handset brands will take up 20% of the market.
"It took 90 years to reach 1 billion fixed-line subscribers worldwide, but less than 20 years to reach the same number of wireless subscribers. Handset makers today are tasked with providing new features, moving from voice to data and a far stronger user experience in much shorter time. To help them succeed, as both the industry and technology leader, one way we've shown leadership is the creation of Innovative Convergence Platforms. This industry's first wireless chipset strategy Platform is a highly integrated and scalable silicon-to-software solution that enables our customers to quickly get to market with feature-rich, wireless communication products; as well as allow us to tap into the wireless chip market worth of US$20 billion by 2004. It's a win-win proposition for Motorola and phone makers. We are proud and grateful to partner with the China Ministry of Information Industry to demonstrate how that strategy is redefining competition in the market place," he said.
The Innovative Convergence platforms, which support a complete range of voice-centric, voice-data and data-centric products, and offer a low component count -- cutting the total number of components to 125 (from about 250), which sharply reduces cost and space. On top of that, Motorola bundles an integrated chipset, software and development tools so that handset designers and manufacturers can quickly build in their own feature sets and focus on the handset's look and feel. This can bring the time from start of product development to first phone call down from several months to just a few weeks.
About Innovative Convergence Platforms
The Innovative Convergence platforms are designed to simplify and expedite the GSM handset development and manufacturing process by organizing the tools and pieces of the solution into three major development environments. They include:
- Integrated Development Environment (IDE) - a comprehensive hardware and software environment, integrating the advanced GSM/GPRS chipset, handset reference design, GSM software engine with field-proven GPRS and man-machine interface (MMI) toolkit, and an application development system.
- Radio Test Environment (RTE) - includes the tools for configuring features, testing and fine-tuning radio performance.
- Manufacturing Test Environment (MTE) - provides the software and manufacturing adaptation tools and services to enable a customer to decrease manufacturing set-up time by quickly ramp up a production line.
