Motorola Supports Government Efforts to Help China Fight SARS

BEIJING, May 9, 2003 - Concerned by the loss of life and growing uncertainty in the community since the outbreak of severe acute aspiratory syndrome (SARS) in China, Motorola (China) Electronics Ltd. has supported the efforts of a number of municipal governments in China to contain the spread of this disease. Motorola's main contribution has been the donation of RMB 2.9 million Yuan worth of communications equipment to a number of municipal governments in the country with an aim of helping improve responsiveness to community calls for help. The equipment, which includes 630 professional two-way radios, 700 commercial walkie-talkies and 200 mobile phones, were donated to the cities of Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Nanning.

In addition, Motorola China's Xiqing integrated semiconductor manufacturing complex has recently donated 12,200 throwaway protective suits to the newly-built Xiaotangshan Hospital in Beijing, Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau, Tianjin Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau and Tianjin Disease Prevention and Control Center.

The clothes, originally designed for Motorola's staff workers in the purified workshops at the manufacturing complex, can provide adequate protection to medical workers handling SARS cases.

The wireless two-way radios and mobile phones donated by Motorola will contribute to quality, instantaneous and convenient communications between government departments and between ordinary people so as to help them tackle the epidemic situation better and faster. Motorola believes that high quality and effective communication is one of the prerequisites for government agencies and other institutions such as first-aid stations to win in the campaign against SARS.

Tim Chen, chairman and president of Motorola China, said: "Motorola always seeks ways to make life better for communities in China and that is not restricted to the development of technologies that help people communicate better. Our success is built around communities that prosper. We feel it our duty to help local governments and people fight SARS. Motorola stands ready to do help the China Government win this battle against SARS."

"As a multinational company with a history of 75 years, Motorola is confident of tiding over the difficulty together with the Chinese people. Our long-term commitment to China will not change; neither will our commitment of service to the customers. At this critical moment, Motorola will enhance cooperation with China and will continue to make contributions in support its economic prosperity" he said.

Within Motorola, the company has taken all necessary measures to ensure a safe and healthy work environment to protect its employees from the epidemic disease. Precautionary, yet proactive measures have been taken and Motorola with its business continuity plans in place will ensure the continuation of business operations and the fulfillment of customer commitments during this difficult time.
