Solidifying Its Industry Leadership, Motorola's PowerQUICCTM
Processor Family Attained Nearly 83% Market Share in 2002


SMART NETWORKS DEVELOPER FORUM, PARIS - June 5, 2003 -- While 2002 was a challenging year for the semiconductor industry, it was a good year for the PowerQUICCTM processor family from Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT). According to a report recently released by Gartner Dataquest*, the PowerQUICC family's market share reached 82.7 percent in 2002, making Motorola the continued undisputed leader in the communications processor market.

To date, Motorola has shipped more than 140 million communications processor units and has garnered over 5,000 system design wins. More than 350 customers worldwide rely on Motorola's PowerQUICC processors to provide the communications intelligence and control for a broad range of customer premises equipment (CPE), access and edge applications. PowerQUICC devices are frequently the processors of choice for digital subscriber line (DSL) modems, small office-home office (SOHO) routers, integrated access devices (IADs), remote access servers, digital subscriber line access multiplexers (DSLAMs), central office switches and other telecom equipment, wireless infrastructure base stations, enterprise and virtual private network (VPN) routers, and media gateways for packet telephony. PowerQUICC processors are also widely used in printer, imaging and storage applications.

Motorola pioneered the communications processor market in 1989 by introducing the industry's first multi-protocol microprocessor, the MC68302 device. Throughout the 1990s, Motorola continued to deliver higher levels of system performance, peripheral integration and programmability to the communications market. The PowerQUICC family containing a PowerPC core was introduced in the mid-1990s, and Motorola launched even more powerful, feature-laden PowerQUICC IITM devices in 1998.

In 2002 - a breakthrough year for the PowerQUICC architecture - Motorola introduced higher-performance PowerQUICC I processors based on 0.18-micron process technology, as well as higher-speed, 0.13-micron PowerQUICC II processors. In July 2002, Motorola announced its next-generation PowerQUICC III processor, the first communications processor with RapidIOTM interconnect technology.

The PowerQUICC III processor's versatile system-on-chip (SoC) platform architecture is designed to enable rapid development of additional family members with integrated features and interfaces optimized for specific customer and market needs. To highlight this advanced SoC platform, Motorola is demonstrating the exceptional performance and scalability of PowerQUICC III processor-based system designs with RapidIO technology at the Smart Networks Developer Forum in Paris.
