Motorola i.MX Powers Windows Mobile 2003™ software for Pocket PCs with "Smart Speed" Technology

Next Generation of Smart Handheld Devices Benefit from Embedded OS Combined with Highly Intelligent i.MX Applications Processor

Austin, Texas - June 30, 2003 - Speed is one thing. Smart speed is something else. To empower designers using Windows Mobile™ to create smart, high speed performance applications for compact, smart handheld devices, Motorola, Inc.'s (NYSE:MOT) Semiconductor Products Sector (SPS), a global leader in embedded systems and RF, is bringing the i.MX application processor's battery stamina advantage to rich digital content sharing, gaming, wireless connectivity, web browsing and other exciting applications running on Windows Mobile 2003 software for Pocket PCs.

This "smart speed" approach is the result of highly intelligent design techniques within the i.MX family of application processors, perfected over decades of Motorola wireless and embedded processor experience. The low power consumption of the i.MX processors enables wireless device users to benefit from extended run times as a result of advanced power management architecture. Features, such as multimedia support and wireless Internet connectivity, while standard on many wireless devices, consume significant battery power. This means less productivity and entertainment time and more time spent recharging batteries.

Design and manufacturing techniques, such as system bus architecture and "doze" and "sleep" modes, used in i.MX processors translate to less power consumption, even with support for advanced PDA and smartphone applications. In addition, other integrated features of the i.MX processors, such as the multimedia extensions and video port, are engineered to enable original design manufacturers (ODMs) and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to use a small number of components in their wireless devices, thus helping to reduce overall system costs.

"The combination of Motorola's smart speed technology in the i.MX and Pocket PCs powered by Windows Mobile software, offers consumers the best way to connect to their most essential information while away from their desk, and to satisfy their personal entertainment and lifestyle needs in today's busy mobile consumer environment," said Ed Suwanjindar, lead product manager for the Mobile Devices Division at Microsoft Corp. "Windows Mobile-based Pocket PCs already include a broad range of native business, personal productivity and entertainment applications, and can easily be expanded to adapt to each customer's changing needs, through a continually growing number of industry-standard hardware and software options." Motorola helped launch the mobile computing industry with its best-selling DragonBall™ applications processor, and remains a category leader with the technological advancements of its i.MX family.

"Once again, the combination of Motorola's hardware and Microsoft's software provides the foundation for an exceptionally smart, power-efficient handheld computing paradigm," said Franz Fink, corporate vice president and general manager of Motorola's Wireless and Broadband Systems Group. "The pairing of Windows Mobile software for Pocket PCs with i.MX processors is a central part of our 'i.MX Everywhere' initiative, and we expect it to bring heightened flexibility and ease of development to OEMs."

Motorola's i.MX family of processors offers designers a comprehensive platform solution. i.MX processors feature an integrated suite of software and reference designs designed to greatly accelerate the creation of next-generation mobile communication products. As part of Motorola's Innovative Convergence™ portfolio of processors, the i.MX family is engineered to allow manufacturers to develop cost-effective wireless-enabled smart handhelds with a full range of capabilities, such as digital image capture, file sharing, wireless connectivity, e-commerce using smartcards, multimedia entertainment and more - all with low component count, long battery life, and exceptional performance for additional applications and features.
