Motorola's MPC5554 Paves The Way for Next-generation Powertrain Applications
Microcontroller's Performance and Integration Help Automotive Developers Manage System Complexity while Controlling Costs
AUSTIN, Texas - Nov. 3, 2003 - Motorola, Inc.'s (NYSE: MOT) Semiconductor Products Sector (SPS) is delivering the first device from its MPC5500 family to the automotive market. Based on the PowerPC® architecture, the MPC5554 32-bit embedded controller is ideal for applications, such as advanced automotive powertrain systems, that require complex, real-time control.
The MPC5554 is a total solution that offers a new level of microcontroller capability. As demands on automotive and industrial designs increase, the MPC5554 offers system performance of up to five times higher than its market-leading MPC500 predecessors. It includes 2MBytes of embedded flash memory - the largest amount of embedded flash offered from Motorola to date - enhanced timer systems and a peripheral set specifically tailored for automotive and industrial applications. To help engineers manage continuing cost pressures, the MPC5554 integrates more functionality on-chip while meeting application needs for increased system performance and complexity.
The MPC5554 also leverages past engineering investments and existing PowerPC architecture knowledge to create a solid migration path for users of the popular MPC500 family. Strong compatibility with this family allows engineers who have invested time and resources using the PowerPC instruction set architecture to quickly move to the MPC5554 and future family products.
The MPC5554 assists in the continuing drive for reduced system costs through its high degree of integrated and flexible features. By enabling external tasks to be integrated into the MCU, the number of external analog and digital components is reduced, offering system cost savings that have never before been possible.
Traditional Microcontroller Benefits with Highly Advanced Peripherals
The MPC5554 helps engineers of embedded systems meet demanding design constraints while offering several "firsts," to the automotive industry.
- Motorola's first microcontroller containing a PowerPC e500 core that includes integrated DSP features and upgraded interrupt control.
- Nexus IEEE-ISTO 5001 Class 3 Multi-core debug capabilities, a debugging feature that simplifies the code development process.
- eTPU (enhanced Time Processor Unit) that provides high level "C" programmability for enhanced timing functions.
- Fast (1.25uS) 5 volt 12-bit Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) for rapid conversion of external analog signals.
Additional Benefits of the MPC5554
- 2MByte on-chip non-volatile flash memory that can be read and written simultaneously, (including EEPROM emulation).
- Compatibility with existing systems through continued support of 5.0 volt interfaces to allow use of legacy sensor and I/O systems.
- Integration of complex signal processing algorithms with SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) and DSP instructions, designed for applications such as knock detection processing in software.
- High bandwidth internal communications with a 64-bit wide cross bar switch using a 64-channel DMA (Direct Memory Access) controller - freeing up the CPU for other processing functions.
- Built on the large software suite established for the PowerPC-based MPC500 family.
