Motorola Extends Broadband Wireless Technology Portfolio with Acquisition of MeshNetworks

Strengthens value proposition for mobile high-speed data capabilities to key customer segments across Asia Pacific

SINGAPORE, Jan 27, 2005 - Motorola (NYSE:MOT) has acquired MeshNetworks, Inc., a privately-held, leading developer of mobile mesh networking and position location technologies that allow customers to deploy high performance Internet Protocol (IP)-based wireless broadband networks.

This acquisition, completed on December 21, 2004, enables Motorola to provide its customers with a broader solutions portfolio to build scalable broadband wireless networks capable of delivering next generation content including data, video, location and voice over IP (VoIP) services.

"This acquisition enhances Motorola's portfolio of broadband wireless offerings and strengthens our value proposition to key customer segments across Asia Pacific, said Mr. Phey Teck Moh, VP and general manager - Radio Products, Aftermarket Accessories and Wireless Broadband, Motorola's Government and Enterprise Business. "The winning combination of MeshNetworks' technologies with Motorola's market leadership will enable us to move swiftly to address customer needs for high-performance IP-based wireless broadband networks."

MeshNetworks has developed a wide range of sophisticated mobile ad-hoc networking, broadband radio and position-location technologies.

MeshNetwork's technologies and products enable users of mobile communications devices to create their own self-forming and self-healing broadband networks. These networks are capable of operating even under the harshest conditions and form rapid connections among themselves without any existing network infrastructure. The technology also enables network operators to move beyond the limitations of "hotspots" that typically restrict wireless service to within 300 feet of an access point, and instead build "hot zones" that offer continuous outdoor coverage over large metropolitan areas.

In Asia Pacific, this acquisition will have significant benefit for customers across various markets including public safety, transportation and e-government services. MeshNetworks' technologies will give end users access to mobile broadband connectivity for mission critical data communications. The mobile network extends coverage instantly from traditional offices into the field, where public safety officers, transportation crews and other field workers can enjoy 'always-on' high-speed access to real-time video, reporting tools and databases. With wide area mobile broadband coverage, the technology enables users to form an instant broadband network among themselves in the field - even if the surrounding network infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed. This user-to-user meshing capability is not available from other commercially deployed meshed Wi-Fi or cellular-based solutions.
